Lecture Series Twenty Seventeen: Geology Underfoot in Southern Idaho 2/21/2017
Time: 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM

It should come as no surprise that Southern Idaho is a geologic treasure trove. Etched in its rugged mountains, stark lava fields, and cascading rivers are the evidence of amazing geologic events. The scenic and variable landscape of southern Idaho records tales of cataclysmic floods, massive volcanic outbursts, huge glaciers, meteorite impacts, ancient sequoia forests, as well as housing some of the oldest and youngest rocks of the western U.S. Join CSI geology professor and author, Shawn Willsey, as he unveils many of these stories from his new book, Geology Underfoot in Southern Idaho, a comprehensive guide to 23 fascinating geologic sites within the southern half of the Gem State.

Shawn Willsey is a geology professor at CSI, a licensed professional geologist, and also teaches whitewater rafting and rock climbing courses. Born in Arizona as an Air Force brat, Shawn lived all over the western U.S. during his childhood. He earned a B.S. degree in geology from Weber State University and a M.S. degree in geology from Northern Arizona University. Shawn has traveled and led geologic field trips through CSI and other institutions to a variety of locations such as Scotland, Iceland, Hawaii, Costa Rica, and throughout the western U.S. He is married with three kids and has lived in Twin Falls since 2004.
